Disinfection
Treated water is disinfected with chlorine gas,
chloramine, sodium hypochlorite, chlorine
dioxide, ozone, or ultraviolet light before it
is pumped into the water mains and storage tanks
to be distributed to consumers. In some plants,
raw water is also prechlorinated after the
screening phase to reduce the biological films
in the treatment cycle. Prechlorination may also
be used to oxidize and precipitate dissolved
iron and manganese from the water. This prevents
iron (orange) and manganese (black) from
staining the consumer's sink and laundry. Water
utilities may further increase chlorine levels
(termed “rechlorinating”) in the distribution
system to kill pathogens.

all the various methods of water treatment.
