Small amounts of chemicals
are used to form a “floc” that entraps
particles. Common flocculent chemicals include
metal salts such as aluminum sulfate, ferric
sulfate, and ferric chloride. Flocculation is
often enhanced by adjustment of the pH with
acid, lime, or carbon dioxide. Some plants use
polymers in place of, or in addition to, metal
salts.
